MEMBERSHIP QUALIFICATIONS,
BASIC ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Currently grades 10, 11, or 12.

  • Have an unweighted, academic, cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher

  • If a member in a prior year, must have completed 6 events last year. (In other words, if you were in NHS last year, and did not complete 6 events, you can't join this year.)

02/

WHAT GPA DO I NEED TO HAVE? HOW IS IT CALCULATED?

The required GPA is 3.5.
This is an academic, unweighted, cumulative GPA.

  • Academic means that classes such as PE, Teacher Aiding, and Avid Tutoring, do not contribute to the average.

  • Unweighted means that an AP/Honors class receives the same weight as a normal class would. (For example, an A in AP Chem would still be worth 4 points, not 5.)

  • Cumulative means that the GPA takes into account all of your grades since Freshman year. (Hopefully, this will make it easier to qualify.)

If you're still stuck: Just make sure you have received as many As as Bs.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I DON'T COMPLETE THE EVENT REQUIREMENT?

Unfortunately, if you complete 0-1 events during first semester, you will no longer be an NHS member for the rest of that school year. Since this is an honor society, we expect our members to manage their time and get their events done in time.

If you complete 2 events during first semester, you will be put on probation. This means that in second semester, you have to complete an additional event (4 in 2nd semester) to make up for first semester.

If you fail to meet probation requirements in 2nd semester, you will be ineligible to join NHS the following year.

04/

WHAT IF MY GPA FALLS BELOW A 3.5 SOMETIME DURING THE YEAR?

Sorry, you will be taken out of the club. We expect all members to be academically responsible throughout the year.

Please feel free to come talk to us though, as we may be able to figure something out!

05/

CAN THE MEMBERSHIP QUALIFICATIONS CHANGE?

Yes, the requirements to join NHS can change from year to year. We, as a chapter of the NHS organization, are given this right.

The main reason we will change the requirement is to maintain a manageable size. Please note that NHS is currently the largest club on campus!

Every year this happens, there may be a few students who do not qualify to be in NHS anymore. We are extremely sorry if this happens to you!

06/

HOW DO STRIKES WORK?

Strikes will be given to members if they sign up for an event and do not inform us that they will not be able to attend THREE DAYS BEFORE THE EVENT (seventy-two hours).

Some of our events have volunteer capacities; if you signed up but did not come, you would be taking up a volunteer position that someone else could have taken. The volunteer organizations do not appreciate it if we don't send the amount of volunteers we requested

  • Three strikes and you're out! We’re sorry, but we expect all members of this honor society to be responsible. Feel free to join again next year

  • Strikes will be updated regularly in the event tracker so please keep track and attend the events you sign up for.

  • Strike counts will be reset to 0 every semester.

07/

WHEN ARE MEETINGS?

The second Friday of each month. Make sure to check on Schoology and Facebook for possible changes.

HOW DO I GET CORDS?

You must meet the following criteria: *

  • You must finish both your event requirements by an earlier deadline (different every year). We need to order cords early, so this means your requirements should be completed earlier! The official deadline for the 2020-2021 school year will be announced later. (expect it to be near the beginning of May)

  • You must complete all credits (including probation credits). That is to say, you should have completed all six required events during your Senior year.

  • You must have been a member of NHS for the last two years (that's both semesters of Junior year, and both semesters of Senior year). Sophomore year does not count! Please note that this rule is made by the national organization, of which we are a chapter.

  • You must have maintained an academic cumulative GPA of 3.5. (This is the basic requirement to be a member of NHS.)

  • You must be on track to graduate!

* Please note: Getting cords should not be your #1 priority here. After all, you want to make a difference in the community, right?

09/

WHAT APPAREL WILL BE OFFERED THIS YEAR?

Stay Tuned. More information soon.

10/

WHAT ARE EVENTS?

To be a part of Cupertino NHS, members must earn three event credits per semester, earned through completing events.

Events give you the opportunity to help your community and earn volunteer hours! These usually take place over the weekend, but we try hard to find events that take place on various days of the week.

11/

WHAT HAPPENS IF I CAN'T MAKE IT TO AN EVENT THAT I SIGNED UP FOR?

To get excused from an event, make sure to email us at least three days before the event to let us know you can't make it - if you do not, we will have to give you a strike.

Remember: three strikes will get you kicked out of the club! So please check your schedule before signing up for an event!

12/

WHAT HAPPENS IF AN EVENT GETS CANCELLED?

If, for some reason, the organization cancels the event, we will contact you and you will not get event credit! (Sorry!) There will be plenty of other events for you to complete your requirement.

If this happens right before an NHS requirement deadline, come talk to us and we will try to work something out! In order to avoid such a scenario, though, we suggest you try to complete requirements earlier in the semester!

13/

WHAT IS THE EVENT REQUIREMENT?

All members are required to acquire 3 event credits a semester (equivalent to about 3 events)

In total, that comes out to 6 events each year. This is a commitment of about 18 hours each year, since each event is on average 3 hours long.

Please don't worry, as there will be ample opportunity for everyone to complete the requirement! At the same time, please don't procrastinate and decide to sign up at the very very very end of the semester. While we do give priority to those with events left to complete, procrastination would just create a hassle for everyone.

14/

CAN I VOLUNTEER FOR AN OUTSIDE ORGANIZATION AND HAVE IT COUNT AS AN EVENT?

Sorry, no.

15/

WHAT CAN I EXPECT?

A fun time! Please read the necessary information for each event, fill out any required forms, and dress appropriately. (You may get your clothes dirty or wet!) We work on providing you with a wide array of volunteer opportunities. Pick the ones you like, and we guarantee you'll have a good time!
